Erin Huck, originally from Colorado, may have found it challenging to readjust.

The native of Estes Park, Colorado, and recent graduate of the University of Colorado placed 31st overall after the 20.55-kilometer route was modified somewhat owing to rain.

Team USA was led by Haley Batten, who ran a 1:20:13 marathon to place ninth overall. Kate Courtney, another teammate, crossed the line in 1:22:19 and came in 15th.

For E. Huck, “this was my first Olympic experience,” he said in a press release from USA Cycling. The level of competition was worthy of an Olympic event, and the course itself lived up to its billing as an Olympic venue. Simply being here was a fantastic experience.

The top three medalists were all Swiss athletes, with Jolanda Neff finishing first in a time of 1:15:46, 71 seconds ahead of her colleague and runner-up, Sina Frei. The track went from extremely slippery to bone dry during the course of the race, making for difficult circumstances.

According to Courtney, “it’s challenging to appreciate how much” the course altered. Even as we were getting ready to begin, they were still making adjustments to the course.

Jolanda [Neff] is one of the top technical riders, and I have a lot of respect for her. She’s the type of person that thrives under pressure and can easily adjust to new circumstances.
