HORIGOME Yuto of Japan won the first-ever Olympic men’s street skateboarding competition.
At Ariake Urban Sports Park, the Japanese skateboarder won with a score of 37.18 after seven rounds of competition.

Silver went to Kelvin Hoefler of Brazil, who finished well than a point back, and bronze to Jagger Eaton of the United States, making this the first Olympic podium to feature men’s street skateboarding.
American Nyjah Huston, a four-time world champion and the event’s heavy favourite going in, placed seventh overall after a disappointing performance in which he constantly fell while attempting routines.
Horigome, now 22 years old, was born and raised in the same Tokyo district where the competition took place and was first introduced to skateboarding by his father when he was a young child.
For him, returning to his old neighbourhood of Koto ward has special meaning.
After two unsuccessful runs, he described how much pressure he was under and how he decided to put everything he believed in and had worked for into the fourth trick.
The honour of winning one of the first Olympic medals for skateboarding was significant to Horigome, Hoefler, and his native country.

“I know I’m fortunate. I’m glad to be here at the (Olympic Village) with the rest of the guys. For skateboarding, this is a watershed moment.

Seven exhausting rounds were held in the scorching heat of Ariake Urban Sports Park, and Huston was one of the skateboarders who battled.
The Californian, who is reputed to be the highest paid skateboarder in the world, commented that his feet had begun to burn. The heat from your body causes your board to flex more. Because of that, I was a sucker for one of those pranks.
“I have to admit that I’m feeling a little down on myself right now. I wish I could have pulled off a few more acrobatics in the open air. Even so, it is a tremendous privilege to be able to skate in these Olympic Games.”
While Huston collapsed under the pressure, Horigome kept his cool and pulled off his most difficult tricks with ease.
The 22-year-old Japanese skater was the only competitor to receive perfect scores (nine) on all of the feats that counted in the final round.
