At the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, the United States men’s 200-meter relay team won silver and bronze medals for the first time in 13 years.
On Wednesday, 22-year-old Kenny Bednarek finished second in a time of 19.68, and 24-year-old Noah Lyles finished third in a time of 19.74, earning themselves silver and bronze medals, respectively. They both won medals at their first Olympics.

Erriyon Knighton, also 17 and on Team USA, ran a close fourth in a time of 19.93 seconds. Knighton competes at the Olympics at the age of 19, making him the youngest male competitor in the event since 1984.
It was the first time the United States had won multiple medals in the event since 2008, when Shawn Crawford (then 43) and Walter Dix (then 35) won silver and bronze, respectively, at the Beijing Olympics. In the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens, the United States swept the medals in this competition.
On Wednesday, Andre De Grasse, 26, of Team Canada, won the gold medal after running the latter half of the race faster than anyone else and setting a new national record of 19.62 seconds.
As a result, De Grasse has now won five medals at the Olympics. His previous best was silver in the men’s 200 in 2016. Wednesday’s race was his and Bednarek’s finest ever.
Upon receiving her gold medal, De Grasse told reporters, “I’ve been through so much these last five years on and off the track.”
