The 1993 film originally intended to be a drama about the legendary Jamaican 4-man bobsleigh team that competed in the Calgary 1998 Olympic Winter Games, but it was reworked into a comedy that follows the athletes as they learn the sport in the few short months leading up to the biggest competition on the planet.

This 2004 film is a must-see for any ice hockey lover, as it depicts the true story of the ‘Miracle on Ice,’ when the United States men’s team shocked the Soviet Union in the gold medal game of the 1980 Olympic Winter Games at Lake Placid.
Kurt Russell stars as Coach Brooks, and the movie is lauded for its realistic depiction of ice hockey thanks to the inclusion of real players in the ensemble.
4. Ice Castles
This 1979 film about figure skating wasn’t based on a true story, but it did win over viewers all over the world and was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Original Song. Story follows Lexie, a talented skater who loses her eyesight and her ability to skate after sustaining a head damage in a fall.
Nick, her ex-boyfriend, is instrumental in getting her back on the rink to pursue her goals. It goes without saying that this is a perfect pick for a cosy winter evening together.
5. Eddie the Eagle
The 2016 movie was based on the life of charismatic Olympic skier Michael Edwards, who had an unbelievable Cinderella story of his own at the Winter Games.
After starting out as a plasterer in the UK, he qualified for the 1988 Winter Olympics in Calgary as the first British ski jumper since 1928.
Eddie the Eagle, although placing dead last in both of his Winter Olympic sports, became a fan favourite thanks to his thick glasses and hilarious one-liners like “I’d like to say I flew like an eagle, but I was probably closer to the ostrich.”
